Coronavirus in the Middle East: updates for June 15

Regional round-up

New Covid-19 cases in Saudi Arabia over the last three months. Seven-day rolling average, day by day.

Saudi Arabia reported 4,233 new Covid-19 infections yesterday – the kingdom's highest daily total so far. Around 40% of the new cases are in the capital, Riyadh, and according to the health ministry they were found mainly "among young people who may not have been following precautionary measures".

Iran reported 2,472 new cases – an increased number for the fourth day in a row. Coronavirus-related deaths also increased substantially: 107 yesterday compared with an average of 74 a day during the previous week.

Syria: Fifty-two people have now tested positive in connection with the Covid-19 outbreak in the Syrian town of Ras al-Ma'ara. The outbreak is said to have begun with a cross-border truck driver working on the Syria-Jordan route (see previous report). The town has been under lockdown since June 7.

Tunisia, which recently had more than a week without any new cases, has reported a further nine over the last few days. One was a contact of someone previously diagnosed and the other eight were among returnees to the country who had been quarantined since arriving.

Egypt reported a further 91 deaths – its highest daily total so far.
