An Element of Luck

Michael Crouch was a political officer who served throughout the then Aden Protectorates and in Aden itself from 1958 until the British withdrawal in 1967. In his book, An Element of Luck, he described his experiences at the time and reflected on them during subsequent visits to Yemen. Three extracts from his book are published here:

1. A day of reckoning

2. Full circle: "It should never have happened"

3. Returning "home"

Footnotes at the end of each chapter give further detail on the personalities and events of the time.
