Abdul Kader Bagammal was appointed prime minister on 31 March, 2001, and the new government was announced on 4 April. In the most sweeping changes for years, 22 new ministers entered the government and only six from the previous government retained their positions. The number of ministers increased from 30 (in the previous government) to 35.
